Historians claim that the castle has been started building by Kaunas chamberlain, Wojciech Dzewaltowski in the second half of the sixteenth century. Later the castle estate was owned by a number of prominent Lithuanian nobility: Jan Eustachy Kossakowski, Janusz Radziwiłła, Jan Karol Worłowski, Anton, Józef, Henryk, Kazimierz Zabiełła, Michał, Benedykt Emmanuel and Benedykt Henryk Tyszkiewicz counts.
