Marius Morkūnas is a young generation artist who explores various fields of art and participates in exhibitions. He was born in 1976 in Klaipėda. The artist lives and creates in Kaunas. Art has been a part of his life since early childhood, with a strong attraction to art manifesting as early as the age of five. When he started school, art classes and clubs were his priority, and when they weren’t enough, he enrolled in *BRAKO art school in 1985. Later, he attended and graduated from the Eduardas Balsys Arts Gymnasium in Klaipėda (1986-1995). He studied at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, at the Kaunas Faculty of Arts, in the Department of Visual Design in Klaipėda, where he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Design Arts (1995-1999). He continued his studies at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and in 2001 obtained a Master’s degree in Visual Design.
Indrė Morkūnė-Makelytė, a young generation artist, was born in 1985 in Kėdainiai. Since 2006, she has been living and creating in Kaunas. In 2019, she completed an informal education program in Painting at the Faculty of Arts and Education of Kaunas University of Applied Sciences. In 2021-2022, she studied drawing and painting at the Open School of Art, Design, and Architecture of the Vilnius Academy of Arts in Kaunas.
The painters actively participate in both solo and group exhibitions, drawing inspiration from nature during plein air sessions. The Morkūnas’ painting exhibition “The Power of Color” was born out of their love for and nurturing of art. Color can calm, provide strength, or energize, which is especially felt when the whole family engages in creativity. Colors are present everywhere—in nature, sunsets, internal experiences, and even dreams. Each of these artists perceives color in their own way, making their art unique and distinctive.
In Marius Morkūnas’ works, the predominant theme is the seaside and coastal areas. As an artist from Klaipėda, he is always drawn to water, which often appears gently rippling and calmly undulating in his paintings. Interestingly, his paintings almost never show a clear boundary between water and sky; they merge into one, with the horizon line only implied, turning the space into infinity. His favored motifs include seaside pines, stubbornly resisting the sea and wind, swaying coastal grasses, and, of course, boats.
In contrast, Indrė Morkūnė-Makelytė’s works are imbued with deep symbolism, containing more mysticism and ambiguity, leaving much freedom for the viewer to interpret the paintings’ messages. Her art speaks of internal experiences, making the paintings akin to a diary.
